Yu Lin Hsu's Green Nest project is a masterful example of how architectural challenges can be turned into design opportunities. The apartment's varying beam heights, initially a hindrance, inspired Hsu to reimagine the ceiling with hollowed-out sections that play with light and shadow. This approach not only elevates the aesthetic appeal but also mitigates the sense of confinement in the 85 sqm space, creating an inviting atmosphere for its inhabitants.
The design's unique properties lie in its thoughtful consideration of the couple's future needs, offering an affordable urban living solution that counters the trend of city expansion. Green Nest's layout includes two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a work studio, and an open-plan living, dining, and cooking area, all meticulously designed to foster comfort and style within a compact footprint.
Material choices play a crucial role in the design's realization. Terrazzo flooring unifies the entryway, kitchen, and dining area, while distinctively defining the living space. Reeded glass partitions ensure the work studio maintains a balance of transparency and privacy. The use of wood and mineral paint adds warmth and texture, contributing to the apartment's character and depth.
The apartment's design is not only visually appealing but also interactive and functional. Curved shapes throughout the space suggest movement and safety, an essential consideration for the couple's future child. Integrated storage and pelmet design achieve a minimalist yet practical environment, proving that style can be an effortless outcome of good design.
Green Nest's design process was as meticulous as its outcome, with a four-month design period followed by six months of construction. The team's research delved into ceiling treatments and light manipulation, drawing insights from renowned architects and continuously refining plans to balance beauty, functionality, and budget.
Overcoming the challenge of the building's numerous beams and girders, the design team succeeded in creating a space that accommodates family growth, social visits, and work-from-home needs without succumbing to the oppressive feel of the existing structure. The result is a space that not only serves its purpose but also provides a serene retreat for its residents.
Green Nest's design excellence has been recognized with an Iron A' Design Award, a prestigious accolade that acknowledges well-executed, practical, and innovative designs. This award celebrates Hsu's ability to integrate industry best practices and create a space that not only meets professional standards but also contributes to the well-being of its occupants and the broader world.
